In a ceremony held at the Palace of the Academies in Brussels, Belgium, on 10 Dec 2011, the Flemish composer ANNELIES VAN PARYS was awarded the prestigious prize of Laureate 2011 of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts. The Academy annually awards four prizes to young, promising researchers and artists. The Koninlijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten (Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts) is an independent and multidisciplinary society for the practice and promotion of science and culture. The Academy promotes the dissemination of science and culture of the Flemish Community on a national and international level. The Academy has four classes: natural science, humanities and social sciences, arts and technical sciences.

Speaking of her award Annelies Van Parys says :
“ This prize is a warm recognition for my work as a composer. I'm very honoured to become a laureate of this prestigious Flemish and Belgian society. “

In een plechtigheid in het Paleis der Academiën in Brussel, België, op 10 dec 2011, werd de Vlaamse componist Annelies Van Parys bekroond met de prestigieuze prijs van de laureaat 2011 van de Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten. De Academie kent jaarlijks prijzen uit aan vier jonge, veelbelovende onderzoekers en kunstenaars. De Koninlijke VlaamseAcademie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten (Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten) is een onafhankelijke en multidisciplinaire organisatie ter bevordering van wetenschap en cultuur. De Academie bevordert de verspreiding van wetenschap en cultuur van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap op nationaal en internationaal niveau. De Academie heeft vier klassen: natuurwetenschappen, geesteswetenschappen en sociale wetenschappen, kunst en technische wetenschappen.

Annelies Van Parys (b. 1975) studied composition at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent with Luc Brewaeys. She has won the prizes for Flanders-Québec, Youth and Music and Gebroeders Darche. She was a laureate of the Tactus International Composition Seminar with Einklang for orchestra. Her works have been selected for ISCM World New Music Days and many of her works have been selected for ISCM-Flanders, her Second Symphony was selected for the "IAMIC Sounds of the Year" (2009) and An Oresteia (production Asko|Schoenberg, VocaalLAB and Muzeiktheater Transparant) for "de Ovatie"(2011) in The Netherlands. She was elected honorary ambassador of the 2011 Royal Conservatory of Ghent. Her compositions have been performed by almost all Belgian leading ensembles (Spectra, Champ d'Action, Hermes, Ictus, Collegium Vocale Gent ...) and most orchestras, and increasingly abroad. “Ruhe”, a music theatre performance with music of Schubert and Van Parys in a concept of Josse De Pauw was produced by Muziektheater Transparant and performed by Collegium Vocale Ghent in festivals across Europe ranging from the Edinburgh International Festival to Sidney and from Rome to New York. Today her work is increasingly performed by foreign ensembles (ASKO|Schoenberg, Ensemble Recherche, VocaalLAB Netherlands ...) and conductors (Sian Edwards, Otto Tausk, Alejo Perez, Marit Strindlund ...) Since 2007 she became artist in residence at MuzeiktheaterTransparant, Antwerp. Productions include "An Index of Memories" with the Spectra Ensemble, conducted by Marit Strindlund VocaalLAB Netherlands, directed by Caroline Petrick, and also "An Oresteia" (music by Xenakis and Van Parys) with the Asko / Schoenberg Ensemble and conductor Alejo Pérez VocaalLAB Netherlands. Currently, Annelies is working on a new work for Bl!ndman for chamber ensemble, an arrangement for chamber opera of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande, and a work for the vocal consort Cinquecento. Increasingly in demand across Europe, Annelies Van Parys has been performed at major festival and venues such as Ars Musica, Kundenfestivaldesarts, Edinburgh International Festival, Festival van Vlaanderen, Rotterdam Operadagen, Saintes Abbey aux Dames, Rome and Singapore. Annelies is currently working on, amongst others, a work for 4 quartets for the Flemish group BL!NDMAN, early music consort Cinquecento and a new production of Debussy’s Pelleas et Melisande. Annelies Van Parys also teaches music analysis and orchestration at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and piano at the Conservatory of Bruges.

Annelies Van Parys (°1975) studeerde compositie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Gent bij Luc Brewaeys. Ze kreeg de compositieprijzen Vlaanderen-Québec, Jeugd en Muziek en Gebroeders Darche. Ze was laureate van het Tactus Internationaal Compositieseminarie voor orkest en werd gekozen tot ere-ambassadeur 2011 van het Koninklijk Conservatorium Gent. Heel wat van haar werken werden reeds geselecteerd voor het partiturenfonds van ISCM-Vlaanderen, haar Tweede Symfonie werd geselecteerd voor de “IAMIC Sounds of the Year” (2009) en An Oresteia (productie met Asko/Schoenberg, VocaalLAB en Transparant) voor “De Ovaties” (2011) in Nederland. Haar composities werden al uitgevoerd door zowat alle Belgische topensembles (Spectra, Champ d’Action, Hermes, Ictus, Collegium Vocale Gent…) evenals de meeste orkesten. Dit niet enkel in België maar ook in het buitenland. Met haar bijdrage aan de productie Ruhe stond ze op de meeste grote theaterfestivals in Europa en ver daarbuiten. Tegenwoordig wordt haar werk steeds vaker uitgevoerd door buitenlandse topensembles (Asko/Schoenberg, Recherche, VocaalLAB Nederland …) en dirigenten (Sian Edwards, Otto Tausk, Alejo Pérez, Marit Strindlund…) Sinds 2007 is ze in residentie bij Muziektheater Transparant. Ze tekende er voor de “An Index of Memories” met het Spectra Ensemble en VocaalLAB Nederland olv Marit Strindlund, in een regie van Caroline Petrick. Zij regisseerde ook “Een Oresteia” (muziek van Xenakis en Van Parys) met het Asko/Schoenberg Ensemble en VocaalLAB Nederland olv Alejo Pérez. Deze laatste productie genoot opmerkelijk veel bijval en zal volgend seizoen opnieuw op een aantal grote (buitenlandse) podia te zien zijn. Momenteel staan een nieuw werk voor Bl!ndman en een hertaling naar kamerensemble van Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande in de steigers. Annelies Van Parys doceert vormanalyse en orkestratie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel en piano aan het Stedelijk Conservatorium van Brugge.
