New CD of the Music of Edward McGuire on the Delphian Label .... a must have collection
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Glasgow in 1948, Edward McGuire studied composition with James Iliff at the Royal Academy of Music, London and then with the Swedish composer Ingvar Lidholm in Stockholm. His works have been regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and commissions have come from many orchestras, ensembles and festivals including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, Paragon Ensemble, the St Magnus Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival and Festival Interceltique de Lorient along with many instrumental and chamber works.
In recent years he has produced several large-scale works to critical acclaim: the ballet score Peter Pan, A Glasgow Symphony, a chamber opera The Loving of Etain, and concerti for guitar, trombone, viola, violin and (most recently) double bass.
Edward McGuire has a long and close relationship with the St.Magnus Festival from Source, commissioned for the ’79 Festival through to the Trumpet Prelude 22: The Big Bang of 2005 and to the new Ring of Strings, so closely inspired by Orkney – its landscape and its people.
He was the recipient of a British Composers Award in 2003 and a Scottish Arts Council Creative Scotland Award in 2004. 2006 saw new works for the Cheltenham Festival and for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the opening of the new Glasgow City Halls along with a major commission for the final concert of the 2206 St.Magnus Festival. Future commission include works for the BBC SSO and the Paragon Ensemble.
