ICED is in three movements with a string orchestra divided into a quartet and quintet so that each instrument has its own part and spatialisation. In the first movement the strings are restricted to a single pitch to create a timbral (rather than melodic) polyphony, and the theramin traces a single melodic line which plays between the acoustic and electronic sounds.
A series of Max patches generate electronic sounds and spatial elements that are played by the keyboard and percussion instruments. The keyboard player controls up to nine virtual keyboards with sounds taken from particles of violin notes and noise, and with specific control of the movement between each semitone ranging from sequences of separate pitches, to slides or glissandi at specific speeds which descend or ascend between the notated pitches. The shifting pitches form chords related to the harmonics of the strings while the percussionist controls the rotation of each string part around the six speakers.
In the second movement the keyboard takes over the spatialisation and controls a different Max patch in order to "play" the movement of the string sounds as "chords" of speakers while also triggering delay and feedback parameters which transform the first and third violin parts (leaders of each string quartet/quintet). The percussionist plays a more conventional rhythmic part under the shards of string staccati .
In the final movement the sliding pitches generated by the keyboard frame the string instruments as they are released from their unison pitch into pillars of chords which span the upper and lower extremes of the orchestral range. The percussionist captures these chords as momentary sonic freezes while the theramin continues its melody to return to the opening pitch first played by the strings.
- Comme l'eau devient glace... As water becomes ice...
- la transparence se décompose dans le blanc... transparency is distorted into white and ...
- et le mouvement gèle à l'intérieur. motion is frozen inside. Mallarmé
