'At a certain moment... he had so strong an urge to hear as many good organists as he could that [in the autumn of 1705] he set out for Lubeck, actually on foot, in order to hear the famous organist of St. Mary's Dietrich Buxtehude. He stayed there not without benefit for almost a quarter of a year....' [Obituary of J.S. Bach]
Dietrich Buxtehude was renowned across Germany for his famous Abendmusik concert series when the 20 year old Bach travelled to meet him on foot. This program contrasts Sonatas from Buxtehude's delightful opus 1, and other music possibly heard on these evening events with early works of J.S. Bach [including a new reconstruction of the famous 'Organ' Toccata in d minor for violin and continuo] that he might have shared with the older master.
