The Composers Ensemble, ‘Britain’s most innovative chamber group’, won the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for chamber group in 2001. The ensemble has premiered well over two hundred pieces by composers including Milton Babbitt, John Tavener, Niccolo Castiglioni, Michael Nyman, Harrison Birtwistle, Franco Donatoni, Lou Harrison and Kurt Schwertsik.

The Composers Ensemble often commissions creative, ‘composed’ programmes, and in the past it has presented concerts devised by such figures as Luciano Berio, Helmut Lachenmann and Salvatore Sciarrino.

Other composers, such as Vinko Globokar, Harrison Birtwistle, Keith Tippett, Brian Eno, Michael Finnissy and Louis Andriessen have performed with the ensemble. Elvis Costello has composed and devised programmes, and invited it to perform with him and the legendary American singer Jeff Buckley at his Meltdown Festival in London. A close working relationship has developed with Thomas Ades, who has performed many times with the group both as a pianist and as a conductor and has composed four works for it. The ensemble appears on an all-Ades CD for EMI. Last year it gave the premiere of his most recent piece, Court Studies from The Tempest, at the Aldeburgh Festival.

The Composers Ensemble has performed throughout Europe and at many festivals including Brighton, Cheltenham and Darmstadt. It has made eight CDs and given innumerable broadcasts including Gerald Barry’s opera, ‘The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit’, for Channel 4. Recent engagements include a trip to Macedonia, the ensemble’s Edinburgh Festival debut and a Prom with Pierre Boulez.
