FRANZ LISZT
Années de Pèlerinage Books I and II (complete; Suisse and Italie)
DANIEL GRIMWOOD, Erard (1851)
Wigmore Hall - Thursday, 18th December 2008 – 7.30pm
The first two books of Liszt’s masterpieces, the Années de Pèlerinage, contain some of the finest, most original and much-loved music of the nineteenth century, from the cool restraint of Au bord d’une source to the Petrarch Sonnets and culminating in the violent passions of the ever popular Dante Sonata. This performance promises to be a unique concert as Daniel Grimwood has chosen to play Liszt’s tour de force on an 1851 Erard – Liszt’s own favourite concert instrument – tuned to a period temperament, recapturing a 19th century soundworld which the composer would recognise.
“Grimwood’s strength lay in his stunning, even breathtaking technical prowess … a heavyweight programme delivered with a boldness of spirit and drama that is rare in a young artist” Musical Opinion
“He has the ideal virtues … he can make the piano sing and is not afraid to embrace an extreme dynamic range, … an awareness of texture and sonority … poised clarity. He makes a gorgeous sound” International Piano Magazine
“His touch was so light he almost let the piano play itself ... indeed, delicacy is one of Grimwood’s most valuable and personal features.” The Independent

BIOGRAPHY
Daniel Grimwood is a distinctive performer with an uncompromising approach to his music making. Guided by an unswerving love of music, and unshackled by convention, his commitment to great music regardless of its origin.
Grimwood (born 1976) studied at the Kent Music School and the Purcell School where he studied piano under Graham Fitch, violin and viola and composition. He studied with Vladimir Ovchinnikov and later finished his education under the tuition of Peter Feuchtwanger. He has since performed in much of the EU, the USA, the Middle East, the former USSR, and China. In 2000 he was elected as a member of the Royal Society Of Musicians Of Great Britain and in 2003, Daniel was invited to be elected to the Freedom of the Company and of the City of London.
Following the success of his recent recording of Russian Sonatas for SOMM Records with the cellist Jamie Walton, Grimwood recorded a solo disc of works by Scriabin to great critical acclaim (“His superb control of fingers and pedalling casts a magical spell” International Piano). A passionate chamber musician, he performs regularly with Jamie Walton, recently in recital at London’s Wigmore Hall, and is a founder member of ensembleF2.
Daniel is making the world premier recording of the complete Sonatas of Algernon Ashton, the romantic British composer, later this year. This concert will announce the forthcoming release of his recording for sfz music, the complete Années de Pèlerinage by Liszt.
