VILLIERS QUARTET

Biography

The Villiers Quartet

James Dickenson, violin I
Tamaki Higashi, violin II
Carmen Flores, viola
Nick Stringfellow, cello

Named after Villiers Street in London, the Villiers Quartet encompasses the grand and iconic spirit of the extraordinary music tradition in Britain.
Described as one of the most charismatic and "adventurous" quartets of the international stage (The Strad), the Villiers have been praised for their "exquisite ensemble playing" (Seen & Heard International), and their absolute "commitment and virtuosity" (The Sunday Times). Last year, the Villiers made their Amsterdam Concertgebouw debut which was broadcast live on NPO Radio 4. Highlights of the 2018-19 season include the VQ's debut appearances in California, concerts at the Alwyn, Swaledale, and Music-Next-the-Sea Festivals, return visits to the Netherlands, a new chamber music residency at Wells Maltings, and the world premieres of four new quartets written for the Villiers by British composers Anthony Payne, Elizabeth Kelly, Martyn Harry, and Alexander Goehr. They have released acclaimed recordings of chamber music by Elgar, Delius, Peter Racine Fricker, and David Matthews. Their next disc for Naxos Records of music by the English romantic composer William Sterndale Bennett will be released in October 2018.

The Villiers are the Quartet-in-Residence at Oxford University, where they are proud to be part of Oxford's cultural life, working closely with the students and teachers in the Music Faculty. Having studied with a long line of European and American string quartets, including the Fitzwilliam, Guarneri, Fine Arts, Emerson, Orion, Brentano, and Concord Quartets, the Villiers continue the chamber music tradition by giving numerous masterclasses in the UK and abroad, including visits to the Royal Academy of Music, Duke University, Dartmouth College, Syracuse University, the University of Indiana South Bend, Jacksonville University and the University of Nottingham. Inspiration comes from the heart of the Villiers Quartet's philosophy: to believe in the art of string quartet.
