Istampite: Medieval Pieces for Fiddle and Percussion
Glossa B072N6WRRC (reissue 2017) Sinfonye, one of the ground-breaking ensembles of Medieval music performance of the 1990 s, under the direction of Stevie Wishart, had a huge hit with this album, previously titled 'Red Iris', in 1996. This 'Istampite' recording, teams two percussionists, Jim Denley and Pedro Estevan, in support her deeply-informed fiddle and hurdy-gurdy renderings of 14th-century Florentine repertoire. |

The Act of Observation Becomes the Object Itself
Machine for Making Sense Rossbin Format RS0262001, 2001 Stevie Wishart, hurdy gurdy, vocals, electronics ; Amanda Stewart, voice, text ; Rik Rue, anaolog, digital manipulations ; Jim Denley, wind instruments, electronics Machine For Making Sense explores relations between linguistics, poetry, speech, music, and notions of sound, science and politics. Talk is the noise of talk, its musicality, its chance capture, words gulped and kicked out, guttural, barked and screamed. Therefore the Machine's talk becomes all the more important for being and around and about talk that you ignore in the usual give and take of conversation. You hear snatches of talk, you hear the voice as a musical instrument. Machine For Making Sense re-evaluates distinctions between text and music, music and sound art, improvisation and composition. |

Azeruz
Azeruz (LP, 2000) Chris Abrahams, DX-7, Organ, Piano, Sampling ; Azeruz, Primary Artist ; Shane Fahey, Synthesizer; Mina Kanaridis, Vocals; Amanda Stewart, Text, Vocals ; Stevie Wishart, Electronics, Hurdygurdy, Medieval Fiddle, Violin, Vocals The album successfully traverses the genres of avant-rock/pop, experimental, electronic, dub; mediaeval, early music and world music. The musicians on this album are experts in their fields and succeed in creating a sonic landscape of great breadth and depth that stretches back through time. Themes, song structures and instrumentation of early European music are successfully translated into a modern context with Stevie’s haunting vocals, arrangements and lyrical interpretations. Traditional instruments are combined with intricate sampling, programming and keys (Chris Abrahams) and analog synths & found sounds (Shane Fahey) brought together by Shane’s painstaking spatial production. Made over two and a half years, the benefits of time and space are evident in the finished product. |

Compass, Log and Lead
Fred Frith, acoustic guitar, lowry organ, violin ; Carla Kihlstedt, violin, nyckelharpa ; Stevie Wishart, hurdy-gurdy, electronics, violin "The music on this record is improvised. What we bring to each performance is who we are and all that we have learned so far. None of us is involved exclusively with improvisation. We each have experience playing composed music our own and other peoples'. For us, improvising is the sum of our personal musical histories intertwined, a place where we can meet on equal terms and discover things we never knew, or hear what we thought we knew in a new light. It's a conversation, an exchange. There are no rules, other than to listen well and act accordingly."-Fred Frith, 2005, The trio generates an intimate alliance of sorts, complete with chamber-like passages and nimbly transmitted harmonic developments. And the band’s nouveau vibe complements its sense of antiquity during these twelve mesmerizing works. Moreover, Wishart’s subliminal effects-based treatments provide a mark of detection that looms as a time stamp for future generations. It substantiates the modernism, yet counterbalances the musicians’ very artistic manner of integrating a historically-minded muse into their music. |
Art Zoyd Studio & Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles, Expériences de vol 4, 5, 6
In-possible Records, 2005 This is a 2006 repress of this 2002 release. Legendary French avant-garde weird symphonic rock/prog group Art Zoyd asked Stevie Wishart and twelve other composers around the world to create a piece for Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles -- directed by Jean-Paul Dessy (but founded by Henri Pousseur in 1962). For the realization of this project, many forces were necessary: two regions between two countries -- Belgium and France -- two ensembles -- Musiques Nouvelles (20 musicians) and Art Zoyd (6 musicians) and their high-tech studios -- and two years of work. Each piece on this compilation explores the essential framework of today's creators, pushing boundaries and revealing the unexpected results from some of the greatest names in today's electronic world as expressed by classical musicians. |
